OFFSHORE WIND POWER – A PROMINENT TOPIC AT GEOTEC HANOI 2023

GEOTEC HANOI 2023 is scheduled to take place in Hanoi on December 14-15, 2023.

GEOTEC HANOI 2023 will, for the first time, introduce a dedicated theme on “Offshore Wind Energy and Coastal Geotechnics”,

This newly added theme is highly anticipated by both local and international geotechnical professionals. It aims to foster knowledge exchange and explore state-of-the-art solutions for the planning, design, and construction of offshore wind power infrastructure—an area of growing strategic importance.

In the context of the global shift toward renewable energy, offshore wind power has emerged as a key driver of sustainable growth. However, the successful deployment of offshore wind farms requires the coordinated development of technical expertise, supply chains, and specialized geotechnical solutions tailored to complex marine environments.

Vietnam possesses favorable natural conditions for offshore wind development, with over 3,200 kilometers of coastline and consistent monsoonal wind patterns. Nevertheless, the actual exploitation of this potential remains limited due to high capital investment requirements, challenging seabed geology, and constraints in domestic engineering and construction capabilities.

To date, Vietnam’s offshore and nearshore wind power projects remain few in number. Recognizing this gap, the organizers of GEOTEC HANOI 2023 have made a strategic decision to incorporate “Offshore Wind Power and Coastal Geotechnics” as the sixth major thematic track, alongside the traditional five: Deep Foundations; Tunneling and Underground Construction; Ground Improvement; Geotechnical modelling and Monitoring; and Landslides and Erosion.

Despite being a newly introduced focus, this year’s conference has already received 17 technical papers on offshore wind and coastal geotechnics. These submissions—vetted and accepted by the GEOTEC HANOI 2023 Scientific Committee—offer critical insights drawn from real-world design and construction practices in offshore wind development.

Dr. Nguyen Anh Duc, President of the Vietnam Petroleum Institute and Co-Chair of the GEOTEC HANOI 2023 Organizing Committee, stated: “The technical papers under the theme of ‘Offshore Wind Power and Coastal Geotechnics’ will provide in-depth, up-to-date knowledge and introduce cutting-edge technologies aimed at optimizing the entire lifecycle of offshore wind projects—from site investigation to design, installation, and operation. We especially believe in the transformative potential of advanced technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enhance construction and operational efficiency.”

Dr. Duc also expressed his hope that the presentations will offer valuable experience and sustainable development strategies for the offshore wind sector. These strategies are expected to minimize environmental impacts while ensuring shared benefits for local communities in project areas.

Over the course of its previous editions in 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2019, GEOTEC HANOI has gradually evolved into a leading international scientific forum on geotechnics, attracting significant attention from globally renowned experts and infrastructure policymakers. GEOTEC HANOI 2023 marks a new milestone with nearly 300 submissions from over 200 individual and group authors representing more than 40 countries.

According to the Organizing Committee, abstract submissions for GEOTEC HANOI 2023 increased by 15% compared to the 2019 conference. The consistent growth in scientifice papers and international participation is a clear testament to the event’s rising global prestige and its appeal among both domestic and international geotechnical researchers.

With a strong focus on sustainable infrastructure development, current global challenges, and the presence of leading scientists from around the world, GEOTEC HANOI 2023 is expected to be the largest and most impactful edition in terms of both scale and content.

Following the previous editions, GEOTEC HANOI continues to establish itself as a key destination for professionals in geotechnical engineering, deep foundations, underground construction, tunneling and climate change adaptation. The conference presents a valuable opportunity for Vietnamese researchers, structural designers, and engineers to engage with international experts, enhance their expertise, and thereby narrowing the technological gap between Vietnam and developed nations in the geotechnical field,” as reaffirmed by Mr. Phạm Việt Khoa, Chairman of FECON Corporation and Chairman of the GEOTEC HANOI Organizing Committee.

GEOTEC HANOI 2023 is organized by FECON Corporation, in collaboration with the Vietnamese Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (VSSMGE), Water Resources University (TLU), the Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS), and the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI). The event is held under the auspices of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

Following four successful editions in 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2019, GEOTEC HANOI has established itself as a prestigious international conference that garners the attention of leading global scientists in the field of geotechnical engineering and infrastructure development more broadly.
