GEOTEC HANOI is an esteemed international conference in geotechnical engineering, consistently centered around the theme: “Geotechnics for Sustainable Infrastructure Development.”
Geotechnical engineering is integral to various infrastructure projects, including civil and industrial buildings, transportation infrastructure, energy facilities, water management systems, and climate change mitigation measures.
Despite its importance, Vietnam currently faces a shortage of dedicated forums for specialists in geotechnical engineering to share insights and advance collective expertise.

A Premier Forum for Domestic and International Experts
According to Mr. Pham Viet Khoa, Chairman of the Board at FECON Corporation and Head of the GEOTEC HANOI Organizing Committee:
“GEOTEC HANOI was first held in 2011 with the aspiration to bridge the technological gap between Vietnam and advanced nations in geotechnical engineering. GEOTEC HANOI provides an essential forum where global and local experts converge, exchange cutting-edge knowledge, and explore practical applications of innovative research.”
Over its previous four editions, GEOTEC HANOI has significantly impacted both national and international geotechnical research communities.
Building on prior achievements, GEOTEC HANOI 2023 highlights advanced topics crucial for sustainable infrastructure, including deep foundations, tunneling and underground space, ground improvement, geotechnical modelling and monitoring, and landslides and erosion. The conference also expands into contemporary issues such as offshore wind energy infrastructure and coastal geotechnical engineering.
The 2023 edition will feature keynote lectures from six distinguished international professors:
- Prof. Alessandro Mandolini (University of Campania, Italy)
- Prof. Giulia M.B. Viggiani (University of Cambridge, UK)
- Prof. Rainer Massarsch (Geo Risk & Vibration Scandinavia AB, Sweden)
- Prof. Antonio Gens (Technical University of Catalonia, Spain)
- Prof. Mitsu Okamura (Ehime University, Vice President of the Japanese Geotechnical Society)
- Prof. Richard Jardine (Imperial College London, UK)
With over 800 geotechnical engineers, researchers, and professionals globally and more than 200 technical papers, GEOTEC HANOI 2023 continues to attract attention from leading research nations in geotechnics such as Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, India, Germany, the UK, China, and 35 other countries.
Among the authors, there are many young scientists under 35 years old who will participate for the first time to present their approved research papers at the conference.
To foster learning opportunities for young scientists and engineering students, the organizing committee provides free admission to all conference sessions and lectures for this group.
With contributions from leading global experts, whose presentations are grounded in extensive research, practical design, and infrastructure construction experience, GEOTEC HANOI has become widely recognized among professionals as a specialized platform for open and rigorous scientific discourse.
This recognition is a significant factor in the growing interest among academics and engineering professionals attending the conference year after year.
Advancing Geotechnical Engineering Education and Research in Vietnam

Initially organized primarily by FECON Corporation alongside the Vietnam Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (VSSMGE), GEOTEC HANOI has progressively engaged increasing numbers of lecturers and researchers from domestic universities
Prof. Dr. Trinh Minh Thu, Rector of Thuyloi University and Co-Chair of GEOTEC HANOI 2023, stated: “GEOTEC HANOI serves as a gateway for students and young engineers to connect with leading experts and companies in the geotechnical engineering. It helps them build professional networks for future research collaborations or career opportunities. For graduate students, this conference is also a valuable opportunity for securing scholarships for research or doctoral studies.”
Prof. Dr. Trinh further emphasized that GEOTEC HANOI has positively influenced curriculum development at Thuyloi University.
Specifically, the university has reviewed and updated undergraduate and postgraduate programs using insights gained from GEOTEC HANOI. The adjustments aim to better align with geotechnical demands in construction, transportation, and water resources—training engineers with deep technical knowledge and interdisciplinary capabilities.
There is also an initiative to integrate subjects or modules on IT, artificial intelligence, and other advanced technologies into geotechnical coursework to enhance real-world applicability.
Furthermore, by strengthening international cooperation and scientific research, the university aims to provide students with more opportunities to engage in practical projects and tackle real-world challenges posed by enterprises and geotechnical organizations.
After 12 years and four successful conferences, with its fifth scheduled for December 14-15, GEOTEC HANOI continues to reinforce its commitment to bridging technological gaps between Vietnam and developed countries in the field of geotechnical engineering.
GEOTEC HANOI 2023 is organized by FECON Corporation, in collaboration with the Vietnamese Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (VSSMGE), Thuyloi University (TLU), the Japanese Geotechnical Society (JGS), and the Vietnam Petroleum Institute (VPI). The event is held under the auspices of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). Through four previous editions in 2011, 2013, 2016, and 2019, GEOTEC HANOI has established itself as an internationally reputable conference attracting prominent global scientists and experts in geotechnical engineering and infrastructure construction. |
