Technical Tour

Site Introduction

Gia Binh International Airport project is a major national aviation infrastructure project in Vietnam, with a total investment of approximately USD 7.5 billion. The airport is designed to meet 4F standards, with an initial capacity of approximately 30 million passengers and 1.6 million tonnes of cargo per year.

In this project, FECON has been awarded a huge construction package of ground improvement using the large-diameter soil-cement deep mixing method, commercially known as Reliable Accord Soil (RAS) method. More details on principle and application of the methods are described in the next section.

Location: Gia Binh International Airport is located in Gia Binh District, Bac Ninh Province, Vietnam, approximately 40 km northeast of Hanoi.

RAS Technology

The large-diameter soil-cement deep mixing (RAS) method is a mechanical mixing method used for ground improvement. In this method, soft soil is mixed with cement grout (as a binder) using a double shaft system with independent and counter-rotating blades (Fig. 2). The inner rod, attached to a high-torque drill bit, penetrates the soil, while the outer rod facilitates the cement-soil mixing. The RAS method has two distinct advantages over the traditional CDM method: (i) a high-capacity auger can create mixed soil columns up 2.5 m in diameters; (ii) the double-shaft system rotating reversely allows us to achieve high-quality mixed columns. A recent case study on the application of RAS method can be referred to: https://doi.org/10.1007/s40891-025-00624-z.

In this technical tour, the deligates will experience construction procedure (of a typical column) and quality control procedure of the method. Especially, the deligates can have valuable exhanges with technicians and experts at the construction site regarding the characteristics, advantagages, and the applicability of the method.
