Project Information
- Name: The bridge is named after Tran Hung Dao (1228 – 1300), a Vietnamese royal prince, statesman and military general of Dai Viet military forces during the Trần dynasty. The general led the army to repel two out of three major Mongol invasions in the late 13th century.
- Location: The bridge crosses the Red River in Hanoi Capital. It is situated between Chuong Duong Bridge and Vinh Tuy Bridge, connecting the Tran Hung Dao – Tran Thanh Tong intersection area (Right Bank) with Nguyen Son Street, Bo De Ward (Left Bank).
- Scale: The bridge has a total length of approximately 4.18 km. The bridge deck width of about 40 m – 43 m, featuring 6 lanes for motor vehicles, 2 bicycle lanes, and dedicated pedestrian walkways.
- Architecture: The architecture of the bridge features a design concept of the “Infinity Hanoi”, with a continuous system of curved steel arches over 6 spans.
Structural Highlights
- Superstructure: The bridge is a steel arch truss type designed to be asymbol infrastructure of the city. The main bridge consists of 6 spans with a standard length of 145 m per span. Instead of standing independently, the arch system comprises two continuously undulating steel curves designed to touch, cross, and intersect with one another to efficiently distribute torsional moments. The entire structure consumes over 26,275 tons of high-grade structural steel, creating a stable, permanent load-bearing frame.
- Foundation System: The bridge consists of 7 main concrete piers, each of which is supported by a group of 20 large-diameter permanent bored piles (D = 2000 mm) installed tens of meters deep through weak soil layers, reaching the hard geological strata beneath the riverbed. The bearing capacity of the bored piles in the project was tested by using the Bi-directional (O-Cell) test method.
Construction Progress
- At this stage, the construction of foundation works has been completed, and the construction of pier and superstructure is in progress as typically illustrated in the following picture.
