Hanoi begins construction of Metro Line 5, Van Cao – Hoa Lac

The Hanoi Metro Line 5 project, with a total investment of over 72,300 billion VND and a length of nearly 40km, has officially broken ground to connect the capital’s center with the western satellite cities.

On December 19th, Hanoi City held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Metro Line 5 project – Van Cao – Ngoc Khanh – Lang – Hoa Lac. The event took place in a particularly significant atmosphere, coinciding with the 79th anniversary of the National Resistance Day, and leading up to the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. It was also part of a series of 234 key projects and works being simultaneously launched and inaugurated nationwide at 79 locations.

Details of the planning and route for Metro Line 5

The Metro Line 5 project has a total investment of approximately 72,300 billion VND, using budget funds combined with capital mobilization from the main contractor under the EPC (Engineering, Procurement, and Construction) model. According to the design, the entire line has a total length of 39.585 km, including underground, elevated, and above-ground sections.

The line passes through 9 wards and 10 communes in Hanoi. The project’s starting point is located at the intersection of Van Cao and Hoang Hoa Tham streets (Ba Dinh district); the end point is at station S20 in Hoa Lac and Yen Xuan communes. The infrastructure includes 21 stations and 2 depots, with the Son Dong depot serving as the central hub for train operation and maintenance.

Regarding the technical plan, the section within Ring Road 3 will be designed to be underground. After that, the route will transition to an elevated section along the median strip of Thang Long Boulevard.

Progress and connectivity

According to the Hanoi Urban Railway Management Board (MRB), Metro Line 5 is a key link in the public transport network, connecting central districts such as Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem with the Hoa Lac satellite city. The project is also designed to connect with Metro Lines 1 and 3 and is planned to extend to Noi Bai Airport in the future.

The route passes through the territory of 9 wards and 10 communes.

The planned implementation schedule is as follows:

  •  2026: Construction officially begins simultaneously.
  •  2029: Construction and equipment installation will be largely completed.
  •  2030: Commencement of commercial operation.

New impetus for the urban landscape in the West

Hanoi’s People’s Committee leaders emphasized that investing in Metro Line 5 will not only solve the traffic congestion problem but also act as a driving force for population relocation and the formation of modern urban areas along the Thang Long Boulevard axis. This is the fourth urban railway line implemented by Hanoi, following the Cat Linh – Ha Dong, Nho Son – Cau Giay, and Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao lines.

Currently, the consortium of contractors has begun carrying out earthworks and soil stabilization at the Son Dong depot area to lay the groundwork for the synchronized implementation of the project. The city government requires the construction units to ensure progress, quality, and minimize the impact on the lives of people living around the project area.

Note: Information regarding progress and planning may be adjusted according to the decisions of the relevant authorities during the actual implementation proces
