Biography
Dr. Cai Degou is Chief Engineer of China Academy of Railway Sciences Corporation Limited, where he holds the rank of Research Fellow and serves as a Doctoral Supervisor. His research focuses on the theories and technologies of subgrade engineering for high-speed, heavy-haul, and conventional railways. He has led more than twenty national- and provincial-level research projects in China and made advances in frost-heave mechanisms and prevention techniques for high-speed railway subgrades in cold regions; deformation mechanisms and settlement control of foundations in special soils; design theory and compaction quality control of high-speed railway subgrade beds; design theory and condition assessment of heavy-haul railway subgrades; and subgrade monitoring systems and digital technologies. His work has provided critical technical support for major railway projects, including the Beijing–Shanghai, Harbin–Dalian, Beijing–Xiong’an, Lanzhou–Xinjiang, and Jakarta–Bandung high-speed railways. Dr. Cai has received the Second Prize of China’s State Science and Technology Progress Award, one Silver Award and three Excellence Awards of the China Patent Award, as well as four Special Prizes and nine First Prizes for science and technology progress at the provincial and ministerial levels in China. He has led or participated in the preparation of fifteen technical standards and specifications, holds more than sixty granted invention patents, has published thirty-one SCI/EI-indexed papers, and has authored four monographs. His Scopus h-index is 26. He was selected as a leading scientific and technological innovation talent under China’s National Special Support Program for High-Level Talents, administered by the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee, and received the Science Exploration Award in 2022. Dr. Cai serves as Vice Chairman of the Standardization (Subgrade) Technical Committee of the China Railway Society and as a Council Member of the Geotechnical Engineering Division of the China Civil Engineering Society.
Practice of Geotechnical Engineering for High-Speed Railways in China
This workshop presents geotechnical engineering practice for China’s high-speed railways. It introduces the development of key performance requirements, and major geotechnical challenges under varied climatic and geological conditions. The workshop then covers theories and design methods for controlling dynamic deformation of high-speed railway subgrades, typical subgrade and transition-section structures, construction control and dynamic verification, fill classification and selection, and physical and chemical soil improvement. Foundation methods for soft or loose soils, expansive soils and rocks, and karst regions are summarized, including settlement control, composite foundations, drainage and waterproofing, detection, stability assessment, and reinforcement measures. Case studies from the Beijing–Shanghai and Shanghai–Kunming High-Speed Railways illustrate the application of these methods. The workshop concludes with core geotechnical technologies and key lessons from engineering practice.
