One-Day Pre-Conference Workshop

Geotechnics is one of the most critical disciplines in the planning, design, construction, and long-term operation of high-speed rail. Under high-speed train operation (typically > 200 km/h), effective and sustainable geotechnical engineering ensures safe operation, minimizes settlement and vibration, provides uniform support, and reduces life-cycle maintenance costs. In this regard, Japan and China have made significant advances in the design, construction, and operation of high-speed rail, including both geotechnical theory and practice. This workshop is thus organized to explore key developments in geotechnics for high-speed rail from Japan and China, while emphasizing their implications to Vietnam. The workshop is technically supported by ISSMGE’s Technical Committee for Transportation Geotechnics (TC202), Japan Railway Technical Research Institute (RTRI), and China Academy of Railway Sciences Corporation (CARS).

The workshop will not only provide the most fundamental overview of practical railway design in Japan and China,but also cover a wide range of geotechnical challenges and the corresponding solutions that will bring significant value to practical design and construction of railways in Vietnam. Furthermore, selected case studies will be presented to demonstrate practical applications of state-of-the-art technologies in high-speed railways. The workshop will be delivered by highly experienced railway experts from China and Japan. Dr. Degou Cai from China will present the morning sessions, while Dr. Yoshitsugu Momoya and Dr. Susumu Nakajima from Japan will deliver the afternoon sessions.
